zines@Barnard Library

(NEW YORK, March 16, 2007)

Barnard College is one of only a handful of academic libraries that collects zines and provides open access to the crafty self-publications.

From the Zine Collection FAQ: Zine, which rhymes with spleen, comes from the words "magazine" and "fanzine." Definitions of the word vary tremendously, but most publications that call themselves zines have several of these characteristics:

  • Self-published, no editor or censor
  • Small, self-distributed print run
  • Motivated by desire to express oneself rather than to make money or get famous
  • Outside the mainstream
  • Low budget

Barnard's zines are written by New York City and other urban women with an emphasis on zines by women of color. (In this case the word "woman" includes anyone who identifies as female and some who don't believe in binary gender.) The zines are personal and political publications on activism, anarchism, body image, third wave feminism, gender, parenting, queer community, riot grrrl, sexual assault, and other topics.

This is a collection for people who care about the printed word, are interested in primary source material on third wave feminism (and other topics), love artist books, and appreciate alternative modes of communication.

The Zine Collection is housed on the second floor of Barnard Library, please check the library hours. Columbia affiliates have complete access to the Barnard Library. The collection is searchable in CLIO, however many of the zines are still being processed. To arrange a research consultation with the Zine Librarian, ask a question or learn more:
