Area Studies Book Digitization

(NEW YORK, January 01, 2008)

The Area Studies Book Digitization Project offers online access to unique international publications selected from Columbia Libraries' collections. These books, not previously available in digital format, are out-of-copyright and by-permission works published in a variety of countries and languages. The texts focus primarily on themes of travel and encounters among cultures, for example, François Bernier's Travels in the Mogul Empire, A.D. 1656-1668, published in 1891 and John William Colenso's Ten weeks in Natal : A journal of a first tour of visitation among the colonists and Zulu Kafirs of Natal, published in 1855.

Texts are fully searchable and persistent URLs are available for citation and linking. Users can view plain text or downloadable PDF files. Individual titles are cataloged in CLIO, Columbia's online library catalog. Or, browse the texts on the Area Studies Book Digitization web page.

This project was carried out as a collaborative effort between the Area Studies, Preservation, and Libraries Digital Program Divisions. For more information about the Area Studies Book Digitization Project, or about Area Studies collections and services, visit the Area Studies web page.
