The Columbia University Libraries is seeking an Associate University Librarian for Collections and Services to lead and advance one of the worlds largest and most distinguished academic library systems.  This is a new position reporting to the University Librarian/Vice President for Information Services.  The Associate University Librarian is responsible for the collection and user service programs in seventeen major subject libraries, including nine directors and over two hundred full time staff.  He/she works closely with the Associate Vice President for Finance, Administration and Human Resources; the Associate University Librarian for Bibliographic Services and Collection Development; and the Deputy University Librarian/Associate Vice President for Digital Programs and Technology Services as part of an executive team contributing to overall strategic planning, policy development, program assessment, and resource allocation in support of the Libraries mission.

The Collections and Services Group includes:  four interdisciplinary divisions, Area Studies, Humanities and History, Science and Engineering, and Social Sciences; four distinctive collection and service divisions, Avery Architecture and Fine Arts Library, Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary, Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and Starr East Asian Library; and Access Services.  The Associate University Librarian:

  -  provides oversight, direction, coordination and support to the directors in the planning, development, implementation and assessment of library resource selection and user services, including budget management and facilities improvement

  -  monitors the development of policies and procedures in all aspects of public and access services

  -  supports the effective recruitment, utilization and development of staff

  -  maintains strong and effective relationships with university faculty, students, researchers and administrators, identifying and supporting user needs and providing enhanced services in support of academic programs

  -  advances the Libraries strategic planning process and implementation

  -  participates in resource enhancement activities, including fundraising and grants projects

  -  plays an active role on campus and in regional, national and international professional forums, and develops strong collaborative relationships at the university and with other academic and research libraries

The successful candidate will have:  a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or other appropriate advanced educational background;  a successful and extended record of leadership and administration in a research library setting; demonstrated knowledge of important trends in teaching and learning, research and scholarly communication, and the changing roles of libraries;  ability to manage in a complex environment with innovation and flexibility;  demonstrated understanding of technology developments and the opportunities provided for academic library collection and service programs; experience with fundraising and government/foundation grants;  a collaborative style, and a commitment to creativity, experimentation, and assessment.
