Columbia University Libraries is seeking applications for the position of Librarian for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies.
In the context of a University with very strong and well-established interdisciplinary programs in Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies (including the Slavic Languages Department and two designated Department of Education Title VI National Resource Centers, the Harriman Institute and the Institute on East Central Europe), and a strong ongoing commitment to enhancing its excellent library collections and services in these areas, the Librarian is responsible for development of this first-rate research collection of materials from and about Russia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe, in Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Czech and about 60 other major and minority languages of the region, as well as in English, French, German, and all other languages of significance to this field. He or she is also responsible for the provision of information services to faculty, students, researchers and other Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies scholars in the Columbia University community.
With annual materials acquisitions budgets over $330,000, the Librarian coordinates collection development within the Libraries in this interdisciplinary subject area, and represents the Libraries at appropriate meetings of the CRL/Global Resources Network, AAASS, SEEMP, ALA sections, the East Coast Consortium of Slavic Collections, etc.; acts as liaison with Columbia's Harriman Institute, Institute on East Central Europe, the Slavic Languages Department and several dozen other departments, schools, institutes and centers on campus with regional subject interests; provides specialized Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies reference services, and bears responsibility for the management, preservation and evaluation of the collections. Collection development responsibilities entail close involvement in the teaching and research activities of individual scholars of the target region and members of Institutes and the Slavic Languages Department (including grant writing initiatives). Reporting to the Director of Area Studies, the Librarian is also the Slavic area studies liaison with the other units of the Libraries. Public service responsibilities focus on Russian, Eurasian and East European studies, and include reference consultations by appointment, bibliographic and library use instruction, in-class lectures, preparation of publications, internet resource development, and database searching as needed. Columbia University Libraries are entering a phase of active programs in digitization and electronic resource development: the Librarian will have the opportunity to propose significant digitization projects to improve and broaden access to treasures from its unique print collections.
Requirements are: An accredited M.L.S. or equivalent combination of education and experience, Ph.D. in a relevant subject area is preferred; Significant experience as a Slavic studies librarian (including acquiring research materials from a wide variety of sources in and about the Russia, the countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe), or a comparable combination of academic and professional experience; excellent language skills in Russian; ability to read one additional Slavic language (Polish, Czech, Serbian or Ukrainian) preferable; and/or ability to supervise staff working on materials in these languages; intimate knowledge of the history, politics, economics, literatures and cultures of the region; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and ability to work effectively and creatively in a complex environment.
