Columbia University Libraries (CUL) seeks an experienced manager to oversee the technical services operations for C. V. Starr East Asian Library. C. V. Starr East Asian Library is one of the major collections for the study of East Asia in the United States, with over 820,000 volumes of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, and Western language materials and over 6,500 periodical titles.
Reporting to the Director of C. V. Starr East Asian Library the Head, Technical Services will be responsible for:
- Training and supervising all technical services staff, including recruitment, updating workflows, and monitoring/maintaining high production levels.
- Managing, coordinator, and evaluating all technical services operations in coordination with the policies of CUL, RLIN/OCLC and other local, regional, and national bodies.
- Monitoring the quality of bibliographic control all formats of materials in the collection.
- Organizing and overseeing the preparation of materials for offsite.
- Collecting and analyzing monthly statistics from acquisitions, cataloging, catalog maintenance, processing of current periodicals, and preservation; preparing monthly, quarter, annual reports, and other reports as requested.
- Coordinating automation applications in technical services to ensure smooth operation and workflow.
- Reporting to the Director and communicating with colleagues on technological developments – particularly as they pertain to Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan (CJKT) language materials.
Requirements are: M.L.S. and at least 5 years of experience in a similar position at an East Asian library, or the equivalent combination of education and experience; strong supervisory skills; excellent knowledge of bibliographic control, including AACR2 cataloging rules and LC subject headings and classifications; knowledge of Voyager; familiarity with computer databases and electronic resources; fluency in at least one of the following: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean; fluency in English and strong interpersonal skills are required.
