The Rare Book and Manuscript Library (RBML) of Columbia University is seeking applications for the position of Lehman Curator for American History.
Reporting to the Director of the RBML the incumbent will:
- Be responsible for outreach and instruction for RBML primary source holdings in American History, in particular the papers of Herbert Lehman and those of his colleagues
- Prepare reference guides, collection descriptions, and overviews of primary source holdings in American History
- Collaborate with RBML curators on the development and management of primary source collections relating to American History
- Curate exhibitions in the RBML and for the web
- Participate in RBML reference and public services work
- Collaborate with CUL subject and area specialists on system-wide public services projects and initiatives
- Serve as RBML liaison with the Lehman Center for American History
Requirements are: an M.L.S. or the equivalent combination of education and experience plus two-three years experience working in special collections in an ALA-accredited academic library, research library, or historical society, along with: Advanced graduate training in American History, with a focus on New York history; knowledge of basic principles and practices of manuscripts and archives; demonstrated ability to teach and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to plan and execute complex programs; demonstrated ability to collaborate and be an effective team player; basic familiarity with web resources and tools

The RBML holds over 600,000 rare books in some 30 book collections and almost 28 million manuscripts filed in nearly 3000 separate manuscript collections. It is particularly strong in English and American literature and history, classical authors, children's literature, education, mathematics and astronomy, economics and banking, philanthropy, social welfare and social work, photography, the history of printing, New York City politics, librarianship, theater history, and the performing arts. The RBML also includes the University Archives, with its large holdings on Columbia University history, and the Oral History Research Office, with its rich corpus of primary source interviews and transcripts.
