Preservation Reformatting Department
The Preservation Reformatting Department (PRD) performs all activities associated with the reformatting of materials that are printed on paper which has become brittle. The Columbia University Brittle Books Preservation Policy further defines this problem and how Columbia is affected. The department is composed of four different units: microfilm preparation, grant-funded projects, digital imaging, and the Reprography Laboratory. Summaries of selected projects.
The Department Head has responsibility for consultation on filming projects, writing guidelines for selection and identification of materials for microfilming, writing grant proposals, managing grant-funded microfilming projects, maintaining outside contracts with microfilm service bureaus, and for direct supervision of the microfilm preparation unit.
The microfilm preparation unit performs bibliographic searching, prospective cataloging, target preparation, collation of materials to be filmed, and quality control inspection of all vendor-produced film. Approximately 3,000-4,000 volumes are processed for filming annually by PRD.
Grant-funded projects are most often subject-based microfilm projects. This unit does not include the current NEH-funded project. The Reprography Laboratory fills customer orders for photographs and microfilming of rare materials, especially manuscript items, which Columbia University Libraries prefers not to send to vendors. Digital imaging operations support various Columbia University Libraries projects and will soon offer digital imaging services to patrons.
