Digital Resources

Although creating digital images of fragile and damaged materials does not in itself preserve them, digital images serve as surrogates which lessen the need to handle materials while broadening greatly the number of people who can have access to them. The Preservation Division participates actively with the Library Systems Office, Academic Information Services, and other units in projects to create digital images and provide them in ways which enhance the type of research that can be done. The Preservation Division plays a role particularly in assuring creation of high-quality images accompanied by appropriate metadata. See Guidelines for Contributing to Columbia's Digital Library.

The Preservation Division collaborates with LSO and AcIS to assure preservation of the digital images themselves, through development of policies and procedures for file management and migration.
