The Preservation Reformatting Dept. provides patrons with reproductions of certain items from the Columbia University Libraries collections. Reproductions are intended for personal or scholarly use. Patrons are responsible for all copyright and permissions matters. Services are restricted to items owned by the Libraries.

Mediated services include flatbed scanning, digital photography, film-based photography, and microfilming.

Photocopy services are administered by other units.

The Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library has self-service photography copystand. Details and policies.

Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, Burke Library and Starr East Asian Library: orders must be placed through those departments. Please contact them directly.

Orders for all other library materials may be placed directly through the Preservation Reformatting Dept.

For information about obtaining paper or film copies of titles microfilmed by Columbia University, read the information on and complete this form.

  • All files are delivered on compact disc (included in price)
  • Resolutions for photographic prints is 600 pixels per inch (ppi); 4x5 negatives or transparencies is max. 1400 ppi; 35mm slides is 2,400 ppi.
  • Bit depths: 24-bit color; 8-bit grayscale; 1-bit bitonal
  • The default file format is tiff. If you prefer a different format, indicate the name of that format at the time of order.

Other Fees

  • A Bibliographic Fee of a minimum of $20 may be applied to each order.  The amount of the bibliographic fee is based upon the complexity of the order.
  • Postage:  domestic, $5 ; airmail $7 ; more, if order is large (10+ items).

Ordering Instructions

Use standard Microfilm or Photograph order forms available from various Columbia University Libraries or by contacting the Preservation Reformatting Dept. Orders must include:

Complete bibliographic information - author, title, publisher, date & place of publication, volume and pages desired; and Columbia Libraries' call number, if known.

Advance payment is required for all orders. We accept cash, checks in United States dollars drawn on a United States bank, Mastercard or Visa.
