Using LibX
Using the toolbar:
Enter search words in the box in the LibX toolbar; CLIO is the default, but you may switch to search Columbia's E-Journals, databases, Google Scholar, Find Articles, and the Libraries website. You can search by multiple terms in different fields (keyword, author, title, ISBN/ISSN, etc.), and by clicking on the down arrow
you can add additional search boxes. Which fields can be searched changes based on which database is being searched. The search results will open in a new tab.

By clicking on the down arrow next to "LibX CU", you have the option of opening other webpages in a new tab, including the Columbia University homepage, the Columbia University Libraries page, Ask a Librarian!, Using the Columbia University page, and the main CLIO page.

LibX uses Google Scholar to search for books and articles. In addition to using the pull-down menu to search Google Scholar

another way of searching Google Scholar is to type your term into the toolbar, highlight the term, and then drag it over onto the Google Scholar icon,
. A search on the keywords "Black Panthers" results in a page that looks like this:

Other Features
Other features include:
- Highlight & Right-Click:
-
Highlight title or author on web pages or PDFs and right-click for a menu of search options, including CLIO and Google Scholar.

- Quick full-text access to Journal Articles:
-
LibX uses Google Scholar to search for articles; use the blue e-link
to find the article at Columbia.
-
Connect to Full Text from Off Campus:
Sometimes you may find yourself denied access to full-text resources which would be available if you were on campus. When this happens, use the LibX right-click menu to reload pages via our proxy server. If this does not work, search the journal title in CLIO.

- Highlight & Drag:
-
Use for citations in PDF format. Highlight title, and right-click. If the option to "Search Google Scholar" does not display in the menu, drag the title to the Scholar
button on the toolbar, to search Google Scholar, and link to full text.
- Embedded cues:
-
LibX places visual cues
in web pages containing citations to books. Click on the cue to search the title in CLIO. Cues display (regardless of whether Columbia has the book) in Google, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Yahoo, the New York Times Book Review, and other pages. The cues use OCLC's xISBN service to search all possible ISBN numbers for a book. A search for the book, Nicholas Miraculous shows the crown cue display next to the title:

- Autolinks
-
LibX hyperlinks ISBNs, ISSNs, PubMedIDs and DOIs. Autolinked ISBNs and ISSNs will generate a CLIO search for the book or journal. Autolinked PubMedIDs and DOIs will search e-Link for full text.
