General Motors Donates Engine to Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering

02/01/2006

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University received a new addition to its undergraduate laboratory facilities thanks to the commitment of General Motors to our program. General Motors is the leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles in the world. “We are proud to support the training program which readies skilled workers for the auto industry. Our dedication to excellence starts at the training level, and helps us ensure we produce and service our quality vehicles throughout their life span,” reports Bob Wells, Manager of the GM Asset Recovery Governance Board.

The donation is an EcoTech 2.2L L4 engine which is used in a number of General Motors cars such as the Chevy Cobalt and the Saturn Ion. According to Professor Anouck Girard, who made the arrangements with General Motors for the donation, the engine will be mounted onto a dynamometer in the undergraduate laboratory facilities and will provide a state-of-the-art test platform for students in the undergraduate laboratory sequence.

Gifts In Kind International, the world’s leading charity in product philanthropy, coordinated the donation process for General Motors. Gifts in Kind International works with over 40% of the Fortune 500 companies, distributing donated products, goods and services through its network of over 50,000 nonprofit organizations worldwide.
