Xiaodong Yang, ME PhD Student, Awarded 2008 Chinese Government Award

04/01/2008

Xiaodong Yang, a PhD student in Professor Chee Wei Wong’s group in Mechanical Engineering, received the 2007 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad. This award recognizes top Chinese PhD students across all fields of study in the world and was presented to 72 students in the United States this year. The award was presented in New York by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China on April 26, 2008.

Currently, in Prof. Chee Wei Wong’s research group, Mr. Yang is focusing on the research areas of the design, nanofabrication and characterization of functional nanostructured optical devices based on silicon photonic band gap materials and optical nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), with an emphasis on high-quality-factor silicon photonic crystal nanocavities. He has demonstrated several functionalities for nonlinear optics and coherent optics in silicon nanophotonics, which will permit the realization of high density multi-functional photonic integrated circuits for on-chip high-speed all-optical information processing, optical computation and optical communications.  Yang and coworkers have published a number of technical papers in these areas.
