Professor Attinger's Student Receives Best Student Paper Award

01/08/2007

Jonathan Kao received the best student paper award from the ASME fluid division, at the IMECE 2006 Chicago Congress (http://www.me.columbia.edu/lmtp/publications/IMECE2006-14675.pdf).
He did his research in Professor Daniel Attinger's laboratory during the summer of 2004-5 while still being a high school student.

The paper describes a novel micro-rotator actuation concept, using a single micro-bubble. The development of MEMS-based micro-rotators is needed for biomedical applications such as drug delivery systems, surgical tools and bio-mechanical actuators for biological cells.

The work was also featured in the May 2006 edition of the New Scientist (http://www.me.columbia.edu/lmtp/publications/new_scientist_article.pdf). Jonathan just finished his Freshman year at Stanford University.
