Professor Freudenstein Remembrance

Ferdinand Freudenstein

1926-2006

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was deeply saddened by the loss of Professor Ferdinand Freudenstein on March 30, 2006. Dr. Freudenstein was known as the “father of modern kinematics,” ushering in the programmed, digital computation era in the kinematic synthesis of mechanisms. He had great influence in the field, and many of his students, and his students’ students, continue to research and teach kinematics. He was the recipient of many prestigious awards and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

A remembrance gathering in honor of Professor Freudenstein will be held by the Department of Mechanical Engineering on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. The remembrance gathering will be held at Davis Auditorium in Schapiro Center on Columbia Morningside campus, followed immediately by a reception. The Department extends an invitation to this memorial to all those who had the opportunity to know the late professor or have been touched by his life. This remembrance gathering will take place during the afternoon of the last day of the ASME Mechanisms & Robotics Conference to facilitate the travel of Dr. Freudenstein's colleagues and former students.
