Jung-Chi Liao is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University. He received his Ph.D. from MIT in 2002. His current research interests include molecular motors, which are ubiquitous protein nanomachines that convert chemical energy (e.g. ATP hydrolysis) into mechanical work to perform diverse functions, such as gene replication, cell division, cell migration, axonal transport, and many other functions. Several of these functions are related to serious diseases including heart failure and cancer. He is interested in understanding how molecular motors play their key roles in these disease-related functions. Specifically he is investigating dynamics, regulation, protein interactions, and force generation of molecular motors. His research integrates multidisciplinary approaches, including computational modeling and simulation, single molecule biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, applied mechanics, and bioinformatics.

PhD, MS, and undergraduate research opportunities are available.
