Open-rank Faculty Position in Mechanical Engineering


Columbia Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University in New York City invites applications for tenured or tenure-track faculty positions. One or more appointments at the rank of assistant professor, associate professor and full professor, will be considered.

 

The strategic theme areas for Columbia Engineering are Health, Information and Sustainability, and the successful candidate should contribute to the advancement of the Department in these areas by developing an externally funded research program, being a thought leader in the profession, contributing to the undergraduate and graduate educational mission of the Department and providing active service to professional societies. The successful candidate is expected to establish multidisciplinary research and educational collaborations with academic departments and units across Columbia University. The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Applications are specifically sought in any of the areas that fall under the umbrella of (1) Energy, environment and sustainability, and (2) Interface of mechanical engineering with biology and medicine. Outstanding applicants outside these areas may also be considered. Applicants whose work contributes to CyberBioPhysical Systems, where the biological, physical, and digital worlds fuse, are also encouraged to apply.


(1) Energy, environment and sustainability: The emphasis may be on, but not limited to generation, distribution and storage of energy; conservation; interface of sensing, computing and energy; cyber energy; transport infrastructure; advanced materials and material processing; micro- and nano-electromechanical systems.


(2) Interface of mechanical engineering with biology and medicine: The emphasis may be on, but not limited to mechanics of living tissues; medical robotics; biomedical sensing, monitoring and diagnosis; intersection of biology and energy; micro- and nano-electromechanical systems.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. or its professional equivalent by the starting date of the appointment. Applicants for this position at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor without tenure must have the potential to do pioneering research and to teach effectively. Applicants for this position at the tenured level (Associate or Full Professor) must have a demonstrated record of outstanding research accomplishments, excellent teaching credentials and established leadership in the field.
