Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship
FLAS applications for AY 2013-14 and Summer 2013 are due Thursday, February 14, 2013.
The competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students of Columbia University and Barnard College who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents concentrating in world area studies. FLAS recipients must be enrolled in a full-time program of study (either domestic or overseas) that combines modern foreign language training with international or area studies or with the international aspects of professional or other fields of study. Eligible FLAS Middle Eastern Languages at Columbia are: Arabic, Armenian, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew. Students can apply for study at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level in each of these languages, except in the case of overseas programs of study, which must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency.
Undergraduate students must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency. All overseas programs of study must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency and must be approved by the United States Department of Education at least thirty (30) days prior to the start of the program.
FINANCIAL PROVISION: FLAS awards are contingent upon funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
