The Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC) has changed its name to MESAAS--the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies.
The change reflects the recent addition of African Studies to the department and the broader interdisciplinary range of the department's research and teaching.
The name change has only recently been approved, so in the Registrar's Directory of Classes, the Graduate School online application process, the list of Columbia College majors, and all other official Columbia pages you may still find us for the time being under the name MEALAC. The old website is no longer current. This new site contains a large amount of additional information, especially for prospective graduate students.
MESAAS is a leading center for the study of the culture, history, and politics of the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.
Our faculty of distinguished scholars and outstanding teachers represent some of the most innovative and influential figures in their fields. Our approach to learning stresses a knowledge of languages and intellectual traditions, but the subjects we explore cover a range of fields from literature and the history of ideas to contemporary history and politics.
To find out about our faculty, graduate programs, undergraduate study, and language instruction please use the menu above or the quick links on the right. To contact the department administration or for travel directions, see the Information page.
The department organizes regular workshops and conferences. Upcoming events are listed to the right; for more information see the Events page.
