In 1993, Columbia University received royalties totaling $21,088,217 from 206 licenses. Columbia ranked third in royalty income for universities. Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked eighth with $5,808,000 in royalty revenues.

Michael I. Sovern's salary as Columbia's president for the 1992-93 academic year was $449,744.
