Basketball A-Z

By David Yeung

A for All-Star Game- the lousiest game played by the best players.

B for Barkley- the most politically incorrect hoop player in the entire world, yet he is running for state governor.

C for Coleman- he whines about money, contract, teammates, coach's decisions.... when is he going to shut his mouth and start playing ball??

D for Dream Team- best team ever played on this planet, featuring the most incredible athletes, except Christian Laettner.

E for Ewing- I have been waiting forever, are the two Pats (Riley and Ewing) going to win Big Apple a championship??

F for Franchises- two Canadian teams are entering the league next season, meaning that the Los Angeles Clippers have to fight harder to compete for the most infamous record in the NBA.

G for Golden State Warriors- they started this season 7-1, they had one of the cleverest coaches in Don Nelson, one of the most brilliant forwards in Chris Webber; yet it turned out they became one of the most disappointing teams in the league.

H for Hill- Air Jordan couldn't do it; Magic Johnson couldn't do it; Shaq couldn't do it. Grant Hill did it. He totaled 1,289,585 votes and became the first rookie ever to be the leader vote-getter in fan balloting for this year's All-Star Game. Congratulations, Grant!!

I for Injuries- with Manning out for the season, KJ still bothered by his injured left knee, Phoenix's championship bid can possibly be hampered by crucial injuries.

J for Jordan- amazing, admirable, awesome...... words simply are not enough to measure how incredible Michael Air Jordan is.

K for Knicks- say "Go NY Go NY Go NY Go..." With Oakley rejoining the team, the Knicks are ready for another title run.

L for Larry- Bird, the legend of the 80s; Johnson, yet a legend, but has a lot of money. (84 million!!!!!)

M for Million- the unit used to measure the value of an NBA player.

N for Nothing But The Bottom of The Net- you hear this at least 50 times when you are watching ESPN Sportscenter.

O for O'Neal- Pepsi commercials; Reebok commercials...... how about "be like Mike" and have underwear commercials too???

P for Playoffs- time when guys care more about people they don't know (say Miller, Mourning, Mutombo...) than their girlfriends.

Q for Quitter- it means Pippen, when he sat out the final 1.8 seconds during a game in last year's playoffs.

R for Rodman- "r" stands for Rodman, and Rodman stands for rebounds.

S for Stockton- a low-key, solid player who lets his numbers speak for him. He is the best passer of All-Time, yet he is never flashy or showy. A very respectable athlete.

T for Trade- Webber for Gugliotta; Drexler for Thorpe...... how about Dave Brown (NY Giants) for Charlie Ward (NY Knicks)???

U for Utah- 15 game road winning streak, only 1 shy of the NBA record of 16 consecutive road wins. Simply awesome. The Jazz have absolute potential to be a major championship contender.

V for Victories- something the Los Angeles Clippers and the Washington Bullets desperately need.

W for Western Conference- the WC has so many elite teams that even number-one seeded Seattle did lose to number-eight seeded Denver Nuggets last year. Fans better watch out and see if the Sacramento Kings can become the biggest dark horse of All-Time.

X for Generation "X"- with young rebels like Webber, Sprewell, Coleman, and Maxwell filling the entire league, player discipline problem has become the hottest topic in the NBA recently. The unfortunate (or perhaps fortunate) part of it is that these crybabies are actually talented players. They can aggravate their coaches in the morning and deliver awesome performance at night.

Y for Yawning- it is tough to stop doing this when you are watching the matchup featuring two of the league's "superior" centers: Shawn Bradley of the 76ers and Ghoorghe Mureson of the Bullets.

Z for Zero- no NBA player has an annual income of less than $150,000, which means that even the poorest NBA player can afford sending 2 kids to college without worrying about financial problems at all. How adorable that is!!
