CS Professor Named New Dean of SEAS

theoretical computer scientist, assumed the position of Dean of SEAS on
August 1. <P>
As computer science chairman, Dr. Galil was always involved in
both academic and admistrative roles. As dean, Dr. Galil promises to try
to improve the quality of SEAS. He will help faculty in doing a better job
in terms of academics and research by increasing the resources of SEAS.
Such plans to increase these resources include efforts in fundraising and
securing more research grants. On the academic side, Dr. Galil will work
toward getting more promising students to the school by trying to
increasing the applicant pool and corresondingly, the selectivity of the
school. He also hopes to get a slightly larger class. <P>
When asked about general advice for first-year students, Dr Galil
responded by first welcoming the class of '99. He urges students to get
the most out of their four years at Columbia. )
Dr. Galil notes that a second advantage of Columbia is that its location
in New York City serves as the focal point of business, information,
communication, and entertainment. A third advantage is that Columbia is a
globally-oriented university that attracts students from all over the
world. Dr. Galil is a strong supporter of the Core Curriculum. He said
that some of his former students remarked that their most important
courses that they took were writing and humanities courses, rather than
purely technical courses. He is very familiar with the core because his
son is a student in Columbia College.
