Vagelos Named Pupin Medal Award Winner |

P.Roy Vagelos, M.D., former chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Merck & Co., Inc., has been named the 1995 Recipient of the Pupin Medal. The honoring ceremony will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 1995, in Dag Hammarskjold Lounge in the Sc
hool of International and Public Affairs, from 4 to 6pm. The Pupin Medal was created by the Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association in 1958, in honor the centennial year of the birth of Michael I. Pupin. Pupin was an American physicist and inventor who was professor of electro-mech anics at the Columbia Engineering School from 1901 to 1931. The Pupin Medal is presented in recognition of 'Distinguished Service to the Nation in Engineering, Science and Technology.' Dr. Vagelos was selected to receive the award for his leadership in the pharmaceutical industry. He has also had many contributions to the biological sciences. He is the author of more than one hundred scientific papers and a memb er of the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. He received the Enzyme Chemistry Award of the American Chemical Society. He was also a professor in Washington University, where he served as the Chairman of the D epartment of Biological Chemistry in the School of Medicine. He also served as Director of the UniversityÌs Division of Biology and Biomedical Science.
