Ice Found on Moon
Researchers say they believe they have discovered ice formed from water on the moon. Eugene Shoemaker of the U.S. Geological Survey and colleagues at other institutions say they base their claim on data from the space probe Clementine. They call it "the first persuasive evidence" such ice exists.
Flesh Eating Bacteria
Doctors say they expect a 3-year-old Denver area girl to leave the hospital in a week or two, after treatment for a flesh-eating bacterial illness. Mecale Cyr has been placed in a hyperbaric chamber following surgery. Doctors say she could have died had she arrived at the hospital a few hours later.
Gear is Key
Federal Health officials say protective gear appears to be the most important factor in avoiding in-line skating injuries. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found skaters who did not wear wrist guards or elbow pads were about 10 times more likely than others to end up in emergency rooms.
Optoelectronics Advance
Engineers say they have taken an important step toward the long-sought marriage of electronics and optics, a key step on the information superhighway. They say they have integrated a porous silicon light-emitting diode into conventional microelectronic circuitry.
