The Last Moment Until Christmas Shopping Guide

by Owen Nam Tran

Season greetings faithful readers. This is your handy dandy guide written for you procrasinating shoppers who just had too many finals to worry about or didn't feel like battling the masses of crazed christmas consumers for that last hand knit sweater at 75% off.

Inexpensive Trinkets, Baubles, and other stuff under a buck <$1

As a college student you're always scraping around for loose change under the cushions in the lounge. Let's put that hardwork to good use. Here are some quick ideas for the christmas shopper who believes in sheer bulk quantity over quality.

  1. Stamps. Everyone needs them, and you can get them in all different designs these days. If you can find the right post office, you can get the self-adhesive kind and be extra kind this Chistmas.
  2. 4 Quarters. The perfect solution to the laundry dilemna. No more knocking door-to-door for that last quarter so you can go dry your clothes.
  3. Keropi and Hello! Kitty stickers, and maybe even a pencil. All girls love these extremely cute Japanese cartoon characters.
  4. Plastic Dining Set. This great gift comes with two plastic knifes, spoons, forks, cups, and durable, yet elegant plates. The perfect accessories for a romantic dinner, or nice spares when you come back from Wien with your double-decker taco supreme and nothing to eat it with.
A little more than a dollar but less than a meal <$10
  1. Subway Tokens. With that price increase, these gifts are definitely worth more this season. You can buy any amount of tokens, so feel free to buy up to your budget.
  2. Bake anatomically correct gingerbread people. 'Nuff said.
  3. More Keropi and Friends stuff. You can get pretty nice gifts for under $10 and they're all so cute! If they get too cute, you can always find creative uses with a soldering iron, or exacto knife set.
  4. Flowers. You can send them anywhere at anytime in any amount. It's best to include a hand-written note, poem, song, drawing, ransom note, etc.
Serious money spending $$$
  1. Buzz Lightyear Action Figure! If you haven't seen the movie, see it. This guy has it all with a bubble helmet that opens up, a laser housed in his right forearm, a neat forearm communication console, and he flies too. Everyone needs a Space Ranger Buzz to protect them from the evil emperor Zurg.
  2. A CD. Yeah, it's boring and the old stand-by, but it's the most flexible and easiest thing to shop for. You can even save money and stay indoors by joining one of those clubs and get 8 possible presents for a penny. Hot CD's this season... The Chipmunks Christmas and the new Ace of Base.
  3. A humorous book like Calvin & Hobbes, Outland, or best of all the Tick! Great for the college friend who has a three hour flight, or nine hour drive.
  4. A halogen lamp or the replacement bulb. Everyone who's anyone has one of these cozy lighting devices in one's room. If they already have the lamp, it's always nice to have a few extra bulbs lying around. You can practically do away with your heater, with the amount of heat these bulbs pump out.
If you don't want to leave the warm, cozy comforts of your room, just hop on to the Internet. See the Related Links.

Good luck on your Christmas shopping venture, and please remember it's the thought that counts. (You got that, Betty?)
