An
Introduction from the Dean
The issues of global sustainability have moved steadily from the
back burner to the heart of political and economic life in the United States and around the world. In SIPA’s sixty-two year history, we have always been
ahead of trends in preparing the next generation of public leaders. In the
1950’s and 1960’s we pioneered regional and area studies. In the 1960’s and
1970’s we developed some of the first programs in international trade, finance
and business policy. In the 1980’s and 1990’s we built new programs focused on
the needs of the developing world. In the late 20th and early 21st
century we have begun programs in environment, energy and sustainable
development.
The Master of Public Administration Program in Environmental
Science and Policy represents the latest example of this innovative spirit.
Drawing on the strengths of Columbia University—the distinguished faculty,
cutting-edge research, and state-of-the-art facilities—SIPA has tailored a unique,
cross-disciplinary program dedicated to one of today's most complex issues: the
sustainability of the biosphere.
The earth is witnessing environmental change that is unique in
its history. Increased levels of greenhouse gases are warming the planet; the
extinction of species is occurring at an ever-increasing rate; holes in the
ozone layer are exposing us to harmful radiation. These are all the unintended
consequences of human activity. Rather than continue on this path, we must
learn about these consequences and better manage our interaction with natural
systems.
This path-breaking one year program was begun in 2002 and since
it’s inception has emphasized integrated thinking and learning so that our
graduates will see beyond linear and fragmented approaches to coping with environmental
problems. Our goal is to cultivate a new profession that manages earth systems
in ways that will ensure the long-term viability of all life on our planet. To
meet this challenge will require an understanding of science as well as
management skills.
Utilizing the unique educational and research facilities of Columbia University, we have combined elements of our Master of Public Administration
program with tailored classes in environmental science. At the end of twelve
intensive but rewarding months, our graduates are well prepared to address
environmental issues from positions in government, business, and
nongovernmental organizations.
As we see this program develop and grow, we believe we are
making a small but significant contribution to the environmental challenges
that we face around the globe.. We are confident that through this kind of
innovative training, future policymakers will learn how to craft effective
solutions.
With best regards,
