1,000 Columbians Volunteer on Community Outreach Day 1999

More than 1,000 Columbia students, faculty and staff picked up paint brushes and donned work gloves on Columbia Community Outreach day on Saturday, April 10. Together, they volunteered on 40 projects throughout New York City.

Event co-organizer Charles Leykum, CC'99, said of the successful day, "I believe that Columbia Community Outreach was a testament once again that all of Columbia University's facets-students, faculty, staff and community residents-can come together and promote activitism in the community."

He said the biggest challenge now was to encourage long-term relationships between the volunteers and their projects.

President George Rupp and Provost Jonathan R. Cole worked alongside students, helping to paint equipment at a city playground.

The event also featured a morning keynote address on Low Plaza by Rep. Jerry Nadler, CC'69 (D-N.Y.), and the presentation of $3,000 and 5,000 books to Community Impact and the Double Discovery Center.
