Columbia women dominated Ivy League basketball last week with one Lion player named Player of the Week and a second Rookie of the Week in the Ivy League. A third Columbia woman was named to the league honor roll.
Player of the Week, junior forward Shawnee Pickney , 5'11" from Los Angeles, Calif.; Rookie of the Week, first-year forward/center Katie Day, 6'-2" from McLean, Va.; and first-year guard Patricia Kern, 5'11" from New Rochelle, N.Y., earned the league honors following their performances against Colgate and Cornell on Jan.17 and 22, respectively.
The Columbia Lions beat Cornell 69-57 at home in front of an spirited crowd in Levien Gymnasium last Friday night. Five days prior, they lost to Colgate 71-62 on the road.
Pickney totalled 31 points and 31 rebounds in the two games, while Day posted 23 points and 13 rebounds.
Pickney is the team's leading scorer with 145 points--an average of 11.2 points per game--and 105 rebounds , or 8.1 per game. Pickney has had five double-doubles already this year and ranks in Columbia's All-Time scoring and rebounding lists, 13th and 6th respectively.
So far this season, Day has scored 73 points, or 5.6 per game, and grabbed 57 rebounds , or 4.4 per game. She started in three games for the Lions and has been the leading scorer in two games.
Kern had 14 points, six rebounds and 11 assists in two games. She leads the team in assists with 56 this season, averaging 4.3 per game.
The Lions now are 1-1 in the Ivy League and 2-11 overall. They next play the University of Pennsylvania this Friday night, Jan. 28, at Penn. Their next home game is Feb. 4 against Dartmouth.
