Columbia will host a Federal hearing on government-university partnerships for scientific research on Jan. 27, 2000. Entitled "The Government-University Research Partnership: The Academic Medical Center Context," the hearing is the last of four regional discussions that are considering the National Science and Technology Council's report "Renewing the Federal Government-University Research Partnership for the 21st Century." It is the only discussion to focus on academic medical centers.
The Council's report, a review of the partnership between universities and the Federal government in support of scientific research, recommends a number of actions to make the government-university relationship more efficient and effective, and proposes a set of principles to guide future policy-making.
The hearing at Columbia features Dr. Neal Lane, Science Advisor to the President, Dr. Jordan J. Cohen, President, Association of American Medical Colleges, and Dr. George Rupp, Columbia's President. It will focus on research and education at academic health centers, addressing the report's findings and recommendations on the challenges posed by the complex interrelation of research, training and patient care-delivery activities.
Co-sponsored by the Association of American Universities, the Association of American Medical Colleges, Cornell University, New York University and Yale University, the hearing will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Jan. 27, 2000 in Low Library Faculty Room and Rotunda at Columbia.
