Columbia's All America Swimmer Cristina Teuscher Wins Honda Award

Columbia's All America swimmer Cristina Teuscher has been chosen to receive the Honda Award for swimming. The coveted Honda awards, administered by the automobile company, are presented to the leading female collegiate competitor in most collegiate sports.

A resident of New Rochelle, NY, Teuscher is a senior in Columbia College, majoring in psychology.

Teuscher recently won two NCAA swimming titles, giving her four for her career and making her the finest women's swimmer in Ivy League history. The only Ivy League woman ever to win an NCAA swimming championship, she has been chosen Outstanding Swimmer at all four Ivy League Championship meets she has competed in.

Teuscher is the first Ivy Leaguer ever to win a Honda Award for swimming. While a major honor in its own right, it can lead to a much greater honor -- the Honda-Broderick Award, which is given to the top female college athlete each year, and includes such prior recipients as Jackie Joyner Kersey, Rebecca Lobo, Jennifer Rizzotti, and Mary T. Meagher. Meagher, a former Olympian, is the last swimmer to receive the Honda Broderick Award. No Ivy Leaguer has ever received it.
