The Columbia varsity lightweight crew finished third at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championship on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J., on June 3. The Lion rowers were only six tenths of a second behind the winner, Yale, the very team the Lions defeated two weeks ago in their historic victory at the Eastern Sprint championships.
The Bulldogs rowed the 2,000 meter course in the fast time of 5:50.39. They were followed by Princeton--something of a surprise after its fourth place at the Eastern Sprints--in 5:50.54. Columbia was timed at 5:50.99. The rest of the field in the six-boat Grand Final were, in the order of their finishes: Harvard, Rutgers and Dartmouth.
Although the Lions' bronze-medal performance at the IRA may be a disappointment after winning gold at the Eastern Sprints and receiving a national ranking of one going into last weekend's race, Columbia's racing season has been extended. The Light Blues will travel to England later this summer to compete in the Henley Royal Regatta, one of the world's most prestigious rowing races, where they will likely have a chance at revenge against their Ivy rivals.
Also at the IRA, the Columbia varsity heavyweights ended their season by coming in third in the third-level final. The heavyweight freshman squad was sixth, also in a third-level final.(Only the varsity boat races in the lightweight category at the IRA.)
TENNIS
Women's varsity tennis player Laila Shetty was named to the All-Ivy first-team, an honor that has made Columbia sports history. Shetty, who plays at number one on the team ladder, is the first Lion first-year on the women's tennis team to receive such a nomination. In her first season, she compiled a 17-4 overall singles match record and a 4-1 record in Ivy play. Teammates Joyce Chang and Ilene Weintraub made the All-Ivy second team for their doubles play.
On the men's tennis squad, number one singles player Akram Zaman also earned a spot on the All-Ivy first-team.
