Columbia University is a private, not-for profit institution in Upper Manhattan devoted to teaching, learning and research. But its impact extends beyond the classroom or lab. As the full name indicates, Columbia University in the City of New York seeks to be an active and engaged neighbor in Upper Manhattan.
For years, Columbia has been active in the community through dozens of long-standing programs and initiatives, such as tutoring and job training in Morningside Heights, Harlem and Washington Heights. More recently, the University has turned its attention to fostering economic growth in the areas surrounding campus by spending more, purchasing more and hiring more people from surrounding communities.
Today, this relationship is felt by public school children, teachers, administrators, non-English speaking residents, local and minority business owners and construction workers, community development corporations, local residents who are under employed, those who want to learn English, the homeless, the elderly and the economically disadvantaged in need of medical and professional services.
The following is a partial list of Columbia's links to the community through community service programs, graduate and professional school service programs, economic linkages to the community, consultation, academic programs and collaboration with public schools. For those who wish to volunteer or get more information, links to program information are provided.
