Columbia Hosts Gitelson Symposium Exploring Shift of Public Service into the Private Sector Jan 26

The Gitelson Symposium entitled, "Beyond Government: Public Service in the Private Sector," will be held Fri., Jan., 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the International Affairs Building, Kellogg Center, 420 W. 118th St. and Amsterdam Ave., 15th Floor.

This full-day symposium is designed to address professional public service beyond the government. Distinguished public figures and representatives from corporations and non-governmental organizations will reflect on their careers and initiatives in order to assess the changes in international and public affairs in the past decade.

For the majority of the second half of the twentieth century, public service was accomplished in the private sector. From the War on Poverty to the Cold War, government was shaping the lives of citizens around the world.

Globalization and privatization today have changed the shape of public service; more and more, companies are taking on the responsibility of carrying out public service initiatives. " 'War' is giving way to the 'Web' as the metaphor of the age," said Lisa Anderson, dean of the School of International and Public Affairs. "Many of the most public-spirited citizens are not on government payrolls. Instead, they work in the private sector, where they find opportunities to enhance the welfare of humanity."
