The third discussion in the Reuters Forum series -- Social Capitalism: Can It Close the Gap Between the Rich and the Poor? -- will be held on Wed., Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. at Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism, Broadway and 116th Street. To register, call (212) 854-6840, or register online at http://www.jrn.columbia.edu/reuters/ - where the discussions will also be webcast.
Moderated by Nancy Barry, President of Women's World Banking, the panel discussion will feature Nancy Alexander, co-director of Globalization Challenge Initiative; Edward Luttwak, consultant to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council and the U.S. Department of State; Sylvia Nasar, Knight Professor in Business Journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism, and Peter Tufano, a professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School.
Among the issues to be discussed are:
- Does the global economy need a value system and is social capitalism the answer?
- Should governments redistribute wealth or should markets be the ultimate arbiter?
- How do we put human beings at the center of development policy and practice?
- Is the Welfare State eroding in a global economy and, if so, what should replace it?
- What should the role of corporations be in promoting social capitalism?
