Ten Distinguished Alumni Receive Medals from University's Alumni Federation

On May 16, distinguished former students from a number of Columbia schools received the 2001 Alumni Medal from the University's Alumni Federation, acknowledging years of exceptional service and commitment to the University.

Ten alumni were recognized this year at a luncheon program in Low Rotunda, immediately following the 247th University Commencement. Alumni Federation President Bernard Sunshine, CC'46 and MA'47, and President George Rupp awarded the Medals. Chair of the 2001 Alumni Medal Committee Carlos R. Muñoz, CC'57 and MA'61, read citations for each of the recipients.

This year's keynote luncheon speaker was Arthur Levitt, former chair of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.

The following are the 10 Alumni Medal winners:

James H. Abjanich, SDOS'83, a dentist in Manhattan and an associate clinical professor of prosthodontics at Columbia's School of Dental and Oral Surgery since 1986, is the former president of the Columbia University Dental Alumni Association, current Association executive board member and former chair of the alumni mentor program.

Robert Berne, CC'60 and Business'62, a real estate developer for Milstein Properties, has chaired the Columbia College Fund, served as vice president of the Columbia College Alumni Association, served on the Columbia College Board of Visitors and has been a CC'60 official and reunion organizer since 1980.

Tullio J. "Ted" Borri, Engineering'51, retired chairman and CEO of the Damon G. Douglas Company, is president of the Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association, has worked for CESAA's Mentor Program and has served on CESAA's Allocations, Dean's Day and High School Awareness committees.

Hilma Olilla Carter, Barnard'45 and MA'47, retired Spanish teacher in New York City and White Plains, is treasurer of the Barnard College Club of Los Angeles, chair of the BCCLA Scholarship Committee, and has hosted receptions for prospective students and planned many club events and meetings.

Stuart L. Kricun, CC'78, vice president of business and legal affairs for Playboy Entertainment Group, Inc., is a former president of the Columbia University Alumni Association of Southern California and is chair of the CUAASC Scholarships Awards and Nominating Committee.

Robert H. Loeffler, Law'68, senior partner at Morrison and Foerster, LLP, is a former president of the Columbia Law School Association of Washington, D.C., a former vice president of the Columbia Law School Association and member of the class committee for his 25th and 30th Law School reunions.

Thomas Q. Morris, P&S'58, senior associate vice president for Health Sciences, is the alumni professor of clinical medicine, a former director of the P&S Alumni Association and has served as a member on the Nominating Committee, Alumni Events & Entertainment Committee and Honors & Awards Committee.

Charles John O'Byrne, CC'81 and Law'84 (IFP), an attorney who does extensive work with non-profit organizations, is the first vice president of the Board of Directors of the Columbia College Alumni Association, and chairs the Association's Communications and Technology Committee.

William G. O'Reilly, Social Work'71, executive director, National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, is the former president of the Columbia University School of Social Work Alumni Association and has served as chair of the Association's Alumni Newsletter Committee, Annual Conference Committee and Child Welfare Committee.

Edward J. Silberfarb, Journalism'52, retired manager of publications for the NYC Transit Police Department, is the former president of the Columbia Journalism School's Alumni Association, current managing editor of the Association's Alumni Journal, contributing writer to Columbia Magazine and active member of the Class of '52.
