Rae Liu, CC '02, and Christy L. Thornton, BC '02, Have Been Selected 2001 Truman Scholars

Rae Liu, CC '02, and Christy L. Thornton, BC '02, have been selected 2001 Truman Scholars, a 26-year-old award for students committed to careers in government or the non-profit sector.

Liu is currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she is studying Latin American politics. She has spent summers working as a legislative research assistant for then-Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and interning as a New York City Government Scholar at the New York City Department of Design and Construction. At Columbia, Liu has served on the executive boards of the Activities Board, the College Democrats, the Columbia Political Union and the Parliamentary Debate Team.

Thornton is pursuing a five-year combined degree program at Barnard and Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs. Editor-in-chief of Barnard's weekly newsmagazine, the Barnard Bulletin, and a disc jockey at WBAR, the student radio station, Thornton has also worked with a variety of public service organizations, including a networking organization for members of parliament in newly democratized countries and a community gardening support and education program in the Bronx.

This year's 80 Truman Scholars receive $30,000—$3,000 for their senior year and $27,000 for two or three years of graduate study. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in1975 as the federal memorial to the nation's 33rd president.

This year's Truman Scholars will assemble May 20 for a week-long leadership development program at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., and receive their awards in a special ceremony at the Truman Library in Independence, Mo., on May 27.
