Submissions for the second annual Online Journalism Awards, international prizes honoring excellence in Web journalism administered by the Online News Association (ONA) and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, close July 16.
The contest is open to English-language content sites from around the world for work first published online between July 1, 2000, and June 30, 2001. This year's contest follows a highly successful inaugural contest in 2000.
The 2001 Online Journalism Awards will grant 15 prizes in general excellence, breaking news, enterprise journalism, service journalism, feature journalism, creative use of the medium, innovative presentation of information and commentary.
Two prizes will be awarded in most categories for work produced by organizations that are not affiliated with entities in other media and for work produced by organizations owned by or partnered with other media such as television, newspapers, magazines and radio.
"By recognizing and honoring the best in online journalism, we can both spread the word about the excellent work being done in this medium, and inspire ourselves as journalists to reach even higher," said Rich Jaroslovsky, ONA president and managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Online.
Finalists will be announced on Oct. 1, 2001, and winners will be announced at the second national conference of the Online News Association, held at the University of California at Berkeley, on Oct. 26, to 27. The conference will be co-hosted by Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and the Haas School of Business.
