Volunteers
Students are working to tighten coordination regarding volunteer efforts for the relief effort downtown.
Columbia Ongoing Volunteer Emergency Relief (COVER) is working with Human Resources and other student groups to maintain one central website, where students, faculty and staff can register to volunteer with the relief efforts or for campus activities related to the relief efforts. To date there are 1500 people on online volunteer lists. These volunteers are being assigned to staff the kiosk on College Walk, distribute information from the University to students, and help coordinate with the Javits Center to update the University regarding their needs. COVER hopes to assist the Red Cross with sorting donated goods and incoming goods at Chelsea Piers, and possibly to assist future clean-up efforts downtown.
And Columbia Allied Relief Effort (CARE) is working to coordinate student groups in the relief effort and is producing a programming calendar with events related to the World Trade Center disaster; CARE can be contacted by e-mailing mja39@columbia.edu or jlc92@columbia.edu.
New York-Presbyterian Hospital is offering free heart disease screenings for those affected by the recent events. Individuals will have their cholesterol and blood levels tested and will receive educational material on post-traumatic stress management. Referrals will be provided as needed. Please come to 16 East 60th Street (at Madison), Suite 470, on any day from Monday to Friday from Sept. 20 to 28 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. For more information, call 212-305-4866.
