We are shocked and saddened by the horrible acts of violence committed today in New York and across the nation. We extend our deepest sympathies to those who have had family and friends touched directly by these cruel deeds. We will work as hard as we can to help each other through this very trying time.
Classes have been cancelled for today, Tuesday, September 11. While the University will remain open, faculty and staff who have extenuating circumstances in regard to today's tragedy may leave. Faculty and staff who remain on campus are asked to help out by making themselves available to students and others who need support. Check with your dean or senior departmental administrator to learn how you can best help.
We anticipate that all students will draw on their own informal support networks at this time. In addition, residential life counselors and members of the deans' offices and many other administrators will be available to work with students. The Chaplain and staff from our campus ministries will also be available to assist students in St. Paul's Chapel and Earl Hall.
The counseling and health services will remain open. Faculty and staff with a serious medical situation, including not having access to needed medication, should contact Health Services at 42284.
Temporary housing will be made available to those who cannot get home tonight; the exact location will be published later today on the home page and on bulletin boards on College Walk. Anyone with an extra bed or sofa is encouraged to make it available to a stranded colleague.
We have put into place a variety of security measures on campus. We, like you, will rely on TV for the latest news. TVs in public places on campus will be kept on.
There will be an ecumenical prayer service held today at 5 P.M. at Saint Paul's Chapel. All are welcome to attend.
We will be communicating throughout the day as information becomes available. Telephone and e-mail access at this moment is difficult, but still possible. We are working to open additional phone lines for outgoing calls so that you may reach your families, if you have not already done so. Check the home page and the bulletin boards on College Walk. Most of you are likely to hear from individual deans and department heads as well, as we attempt to come together in mutual support at this most troubling time.
