Columbia University's Earth Institute will explore the do's and don'ts concerning reservoirs in a lecture to be held Sept. 13 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Faculty Room at Low Memorial Library.
In 1997 a landmark agreement between New York City and upstate watershed communities set forth details and commitments in order to protect the watershed and reservoir system that supplies nine million people. Federal agencies also approved the agreement and agreed to waive the filtration rule. Without the waiver New York City would have to spend billions of dollars to filter its water. It's now four years later - where do we stand? Is the City living up to its promises? How are upstate communities faring? Is a mid-course correction in the offing?
