Columbia first-year Eva Soley Guobjörnsdottir has been selected to compete for Iceland's World Cup qualifying team. She will compete in two matches in September – vs. Italy on the 8th, and Spain the 30th – then will return to action for the Lion women's soccer team in October.
Guobjörnsdottir, who hails from Kopavogur, Iceland, started at stopper in the Icelandic squad's first World Cup qualifier vs. Russia in August. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Columbia head coach Kevin McCarthy notes, "Starting in a World Cup qualifier is a pretty good indication that she would be selected for the World Cup team in 2003, should Iceland qualify."
The 5'8" Columbia College first-year has not played a game yet for Columbia, but will contend for a spot at midfield for the Light Blue upon her return to New York.
2001 Columbia Women's Soccer
Expect to see a very different Columbia squad in 2001. The team returns 14 of 17 letterwinners and nine of 11 starters. Six of those letterwinners and three starters were first-years in 2000. This group has had a year to play and train together, and has demonstrated the work ethic necessary for a winning team. Toss in a bounty of skilled first-years – a dozen, to be exact – and you have the makings of a group poised for a major leap in the fall.
"There was an absolute commitment to winter and spring training and fitness, which has created an environment for success and a potentially very exciting season," notes head coach Kevin McCarthy.
