News Coverage of Presidential Appointment

On Saturday, October 6, Columbia University's Board of Trustees unanimously ratified the selection of Lee C. Bollinger, president of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, to be the 19th President of the University.

In the New York Times, Oct. 8, Bollinger is reported to have "talked affably of his life, his ideas and his desire to help propel Columbia from its position as 'certainly one of the 10 greatest universities in the country' to one that ranks 'among the handful of truly great universities of the world.'"

After accepting the position, Bollinger told the L.A. Times "it's an amazing feeling to be part of such a world-class institution. To have the opportunity to be president of Columbia University is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. I am deeply grateful for it and thrilled."

The Chronicle of Higher Education, Oct. 8, reported that presidential search committee chairman, Henry L. King said the committee particularly liked Mr. Bollinger's focus on life sciences at Michigan and his work as a fund raiser. "He has a proven track record in a major, distinguished university that is just as complex as Columbia," said King.

In the L.A. Times, Oct. 7, David J. Stern, chairman of the Columbia trustees, said "we are delighted to have Lee Bollinger rejoin the Columbia family."
