Columbia University Health and Related Services (HRS) is now offering the flu vaccine to Columbia faculty and staff members, in addition to students. The cost of the vaccine is $20.
"It is not too late to get the flu vaccine," said Dr. Jane Bedell, Medical Director of HRS. "Influenza activity in New York City is low to date, and now is a good time to become immunized."
January and February are peak months of flu activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals at average risk can be immunized at any time during the flu season. The flu vaccine is particularly recommended for individuals who are at higher than average risk for complications from influenza. This includes individuals who are aged 50 and older, persons with chronic medical conditions and health care workers who might inadvertently transmit the flu virus to patients.
Several clinical studies have shown that the annual flu vaccine is 70-90% effective against influenza. While the vaccination does not guarantee that individuals will not get sick from the flu, it does significantly reduce one's risk for that year.
To obtain the flu vaccine University students, faculty and staff should make an appointment with HRS by calling 854-2284. Click for more information regarding the flu.
