In the Wall Street Journal's opinion page (6/06/02), Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia, urges the United States to contribute $2.5 billion per year for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria -- a 12-fold increase in the current American support. Sachs argues that funding at this level would begin to alleviate death and poverty in Africa, where nearly 20,000 die daily from HIV.
