Columbia, Barnard Students to Participate in Student Lobby Day in Washington, April 9

Rep. Mark Kirk (R- Ill.) speaks to students during the 2002 Student Lobby Day.

Columbia and Barnard students are invited to attend the annual Columbia/Barnard, Cornell and NYU Student Lobby Day in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, April 9. Participants will take a bus to Washington for a day of meetings with Members of Congress or their staff. The trip includes a breakfast briefing with guest speakers who are recent Columbia alumni working on Capitol Hill.

Student Lobby Day offers a great opportunity for students to express their support for the federal student aid programs and learn about the legislative process.

The bus will depart from 116th Street and Broadway at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, and will depart Washington, D.C., at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9. All meals and lodging are provided.

Last year more than 60 students participated in 50 meetings. The offices that students visited included: Senators Clinton (D-N.Y.), Schumer (D-N.Y.), Kennedy (D-Mass.), McCain (R-Ariz.), Lieberman (D-Conn.) and Feinstein (D-Calif.), as well as House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.) and Representatives Nadler (R-N.Y.) Sweeney (R-N.Y.), Meeks (D-N.Y.), Serrano (D-N.Y.) and Grucci (R-N.Y.).

To sign up for the Washington, D.C., Student Lobby Day please email SL758@columbia.edu, including your name, school, phone number and hometown/permanent address. Permanent addresses are needed to try to arrange meetings with the offices of your hometown representatives.
