Columbia Engineering Professor Perwez Shahabuddin Dies

Nov. 21, 2005 – Perwez Shahabuddin, professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) at Columbia's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, died Thursday, Nov. 17, Columbia University has announced. He had been teaching at Columbia University since 1995.

Columbia University joins his family, friends and colleagues in their sorrow. Professor Shahabuddin was an accomplished researcher, a dedicated teacher and served as the director of the Ph.D. program for the IEOR Department at Columbia. In 2004, he was honored with the annual Great Teacher Award, presented by the Society of Columbia Graduates, for his ability to make knowledge accessible and exciting to students. He will be sorely missed by the entire Columbia community.

In addition to the viewing service that was held this past weekend at the Dar-ul-Islah Mosque in Teaneck, New Jersey, a separate memorial service is planned at Columbia University in the spring. Details on that memorial service will be posted here, as they become available. Shahabuddin is survived by his wife and two children.
