de Grazia Examines "How the West Was Won for Mass Consumption," Feb. 27

On Monday, Feb. 27, History Professor Victoria de Grazia, will discuss "How the West Was Won for Mass Consumption: the Italian Campaign, 1953- 1973." The lecture will begin at 2:40 p.m. at the Italian Academy's Teatro, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue at 118 th Street.

de Grazia specializes in the contemporary history of Western Europe , particularly mass and consumer cultures, gender, and the history of family politics. She has served on the board of editors of numerous journals including the Journal of Modern History, Geneses, Contemporary European History and the Journal of Consumer Culture . From 1997 to 2002, she was the National Chair of the Council for European Studies. She recently has taught at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and various other European universities, and lectured in the U.S., Canada, Cuba, and Europe. Currently she also teaches at the European Union's graduate faculty, the European University Institute at Fiesole, Italy.

Her publications include: The Culture of Consent: Mass Organization of Leisure in Fascist Italy, (Cambridge University Press, 1981), How Fascism Ruled Women: Italy, 1920-1945 (University of California Press, 1992), The Sex of Things: Gender and Consumption in Historical Perspective (University of California Press, 1996), and Irresistible Empire (Harvard University Press, 2005).

The event is part of the Academy's "Italy at Columbia" lecture series. The series will continue on Monday, April 3, at 5:30 p.m. when Gayatri Spivak, the Avalon Foundation Professor of the Humanities, will discuss "Dante's De Vulgari Eloquentia as a World Text."
