How Blogs Are Changing Media Relations, Apr. 21

On Friday, April 21, Columbia University's School of Continuing Education will host a panel discussion on how blogs are changing media relations.

This event will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in 717 Hamilton Hall.

Panelists include: Mark Edward Goodrich, manager, business development, BusinessWeek Online; Brian Ward, senior web producer, Tech Confidential; Tom Groppe, executive editor, TheDeal.com; Dave Lorenzo, author, Career Intensity; and moderated by Shawn McIntosh, Columbia Strategic Communications faculty.

Blogs have inspired both the entrepreneurial and the curious to establish themselves as ad hoc media enterprises, while at the same time challenging existing media entities to rethink their core businesses. Anyone can start a blog, but how does one establish a successful blog that rises above the crowded airwaves and finds a loyal audience? This panel explores the shifting role of mainstream media as gatekeepers and the promise -- and pitfalls -- of strategic communication professionals who are considering using blogs.

The panel will discuss the tools and services necessary to make any blog "top of mind" and also explore new and emerging technologies that will likely alter the blogosphere, including podcasts and vlogs.

This event is open to the public and is part of a seminar series sponsored by Columbia's Master of Science in Strategic Communications. For more information, visit the Master of Science in Strategic Communications Seminars page.
