Freud's heirs focused on the mother and her role in the early development of the infant. But what has the father's absence wrought in psychic, analytic and communal life in the 21st century? Can his diminished role account for seemingly unrelated phenomena as Middle East uprisings and U.S. political paternalism? Columbia University hosts a 2-day conference on April 29 and 30 to address these and other provocative questions.
The conference will be held in the Low Library Rotunda from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, and from 9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 30.
The first of three panels will be "The Father and the Body." Eric Laurent, French psychoanalyst, Lacanian specialist and member of the Bureau of the World Association of Psychoanalysis, joins noted analysts Marilia Aisenstein, Thomas Laqueur and Maria Christina Aguirre.
Andre Green, the influential analyst from France who wrote the landmark 1980 paper "The Dead Mother," which changed the face of psychoanalytic theory and practice, will deliver the plenary address.
