Columbia Examines " Power in Thought and Practice," April 14

On Friday, April 14, scholars and students will explore the location, meanings and manifestations of power -- in its social and political contexts -- during the conference "Power in Thought and Practice."

The conference honors the 50 th anniversary of the publication of Columbia sociologist C. Wright Mills' landmark work, The Power Elite , a classic study of power in American society that continues to challenge sociologists to be public, political and critical.

The daylong conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. in 301 Philosophy Hall.

Paul Rabinow, professor of anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley, will offer the keynote address at 3:45 p.m. The conference will include two graduate student panels and a faculty panel on the intellectual history and influence of C. Wright Mills, featuring Stanley Aronowitz, distinguished professor of sociology at CUNY; Todd Gitlin, columnist and professor of journalism and sociology at Columbia, and Steven Lukes, sociology professor at NYU.
