WKCR 89.9 FM presents Samuel Beckett's Cascando, May 14

May 14, 2006 from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. EDT

This year marks the centennial of the birth of Samuel Beckett, one of the 20th century's most innovative and influential writers. In honor of this occasion, the WKCR New Music Department is proud to present Beckett's rarely heard 1962 radio piece Cascando. Directed by Alexis Poledouris, the production features the voices of Luis Moreno and Laura Heidinger, as well as new music by David Tam.

The last of Beckett's six original works for radio, Cascando mixes sound and meaning into an eerie, mesmerizing mindscape. As two voices float in and out of a never-ending story, fragments of music offer their own cryptic commentary. The rest, as is the case so often with Beckett, is silence.

An additional broadcast of the piece can be heard at Monday May 15 at 4:30 p.m.

Cascando is sponsored by the Columbia University Arts Initiative. The CUAI Support Fund is made possible through a generous gift from David and Susie Sainsbury.

Because of copyright restrictions, this program will be presented only via FM radio and not via our Web site.
